St. Joseph’s Prep senior midfielder Dan Crawford has made a commitment to play Division III lacrosse at the University of Scranton.
Crawford helped the Hawks’ reach the Catholic League Championship game last year. St. Joe’s finished 13-8 overall and ranked No. 8 in the final state poll.
Crawford, who plans to become an English major, cited the campus scenery and the community of Scranton in convincing him to commit to the school.
“I really loved the campus,” Crawford said. “Up there in the mountains it’s really pretty. And the people at the school itself; they’re so welcoming.”
Crawford also liked the camaraderie and the atmosphere of the Royals’ squad when he visited the school.
“I went there for an overnight,” Crawford said. “I stayed there with one of the guys and I got to meet most of the team, and they all just seemed like a real tight-knit group. [They were] just a bunch of real chill guys and everything that I was kind of looking for in a team.”
There are three St. Joe’s Prep alums already playing at Scranton: junior defenseman John McShea, freshman midfielder Fran Smith and freshman midfielder John Gregitis. In all, there are 15 Philly products on the team.
Crawford is the second St. Joe’s senior to commit to a Division III school; defenseman Clint Barber has committed to Denison. Also, six Hawk seniors have committed to Division I colleges: Attackman Brad James (High Point Univ.), midfielder Jeff Heath (Delaware), attackman Rob Watts (St. Joseph’s Univ.), face-off specialist/midfielder Jake O’Brien (Lafayette), attackman Cory Scheuerle (Lafayette) and defenseman Connor Dent (Bryant).
“The number one goal is to win the Catholic League, but this year we have a real sense of urgency about it just because now this team is pretty much all seniors,” Crawford said. “And last year’s loss to La Salle was really bitter, so we’re really ready to get back at it with them. And we’re looking not only to the Catholic League, but beyond.”
